Abstract
Menopause is a silent but significant event in women’s life. It causes dramatic change in physical and psychological aspects. It occupies almost one third of a woman’s life. This study was done to evaluate the effects of menopause and changes it brings to various physical and biochemical parameters. The aim of this study was to find out the effect of body mass index, fasting serum glucose and serum calcium levels in postmenopausal women in Mymensingh locality. This analytical type of cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Bangladesh from July 2023 to June 2024. A total 200 subjects were selected and from them 100 were grouped as Control group, Group I (reproductive women) and 100 were grouped as Study group, Group II (postmenopausal women). The results were calculated and analyzed by using SPSS. Anthropometric measurements such as height and weight taken in meter and kilogram respectively. Laboratory analysis of fasting serum glucose was measured by GOD-POD method and serum calcium by o-Cresolpthalein direct method. In this study it was found that body mass index, fasting serum glucose and serum calcium were altered significantly in postmenopausal women in comparison to healthy reproductive women. Fasting serum glucose was positively correlated with body mass index. Serum calcium was negatively correlated with body mass index. Therefore, by this study we recommend that routine estimation of these parameters is important for prevention of complications related to menopause.
